Who are NNL?

NNL is the UK’s national laboratory for nuclear fission. We are scientists, engineers and experts all working to harness nuclear science to benefit society.

Although this document draws upon our specialist nuclear expertise and research as a laboratory, we take a neutral approach to the UK’s energy future. Our belief in nuclear’s essential role in this is underpinned by modelling and science, not by commercial imperative.

We appreciate that the energy transition will require an integrated system of complementary technologies, not just nuclear. But without nuclear, the UK’s energy system would be significantly riskier, costlier and more uncertain.

Please note that this report was published in September 2023. We are now, United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory and Hanson UK is now Heidelberg Materials UK.
